Core Web Vitals is Google’s method of formalizing three metrics as important to UX:
Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): This measures how long it takes for the largest element on the screen to load once a user navigates to a URL – a loading performance metric.
First Input Delay (FID): The time it takes between a user clicking an interactive element and the browser responding to it – a measure of the interactivity of your web page.
Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): This metric returns the sum total of any ‘layout shifts’ during a page’s lifespan – whenever your page’s elements change position. This is a visual stability metric looking at how elements of the page are loaded and rendered.
To summarize, Core Web Vitals are a set of metrics that form part of Google’s UX analysis when it comes to ranking a site for search.
You can see Google Core Web Vitals metrics for your site in Google Search Console and also by using the Google page speed insights tool. You can see if your pages are categorized as “poor URLs”, “URLs need improvement” or “good URLs.”
In our opinion, PageSpeed Insights provides the best and most straightforward way to test Core Web Vitals. Once you input your domain name and begin the analysis, you’ll get a report showing the field data at the top and the Core Web Vitals marked with a blue ribbon icon:
With the rollout of Core Web Vitals in May 2021, this update from Google will have a profound effect on most existing sites.
There is every chance, no matter the nature of your business, that your website serves to generate new business and is a big part of your business’s success. A slow website is likely to miss out on conversions and revenue. Most people will wait only 2-3 seconds for a page to load before they go elsewhere.
There are over 200 ranking factors that Google uses to determine where a site ranks in a search. It’s unknown how much Core Web Vitals will impact rankings but it’s likely to be a significant element and therefore should be strongly considered in your SEO strategy.

Whilst we can not guarantee passes on all areas of Core Web Vitals and scores of 90+ for speed, we have not yet worked on a site where we have been unable to achieve passes across all metrics.
We will always be able to make significant improvements to your website’s speed and Core Web Vitals. In a small number of cases, it may be that the design will always slow down your site, making it almost impossible to achieve scores of 90+ and pass all metrics.
In these instances, we can offer to redesign pages and functionality if this is the only option. We will always be upfront with you if this challenge arises and ensure there is clarity on the best way forward to guarantee strong outcomes.
We will need access to your WP-admin dashboard along with host account access (delegate or collaborator) and third-party CDN if applicable. We will always work in a staging environment before purchasing any changes to live. We can either use your staging environment or set one up at our end for you.
We will review your site regularly for 1-2 months following the work to ensure results stick. Any further bug fixes and work that’s required during this period are included at no additional cost.
